What you see on the gold price live stream

The screen shows one object: the last 24 hours of the gold price as a solid ingot, turning slowly under a low light. The hero number at the top is the live XAU/USD spot. Everything else on screen is context for that number.

Where the data comes from

The spot price comes from gold-api.com, a free public API that returns XAU/USD every time we ask, which is every 30 seconds. The API has no free history, so we build the 24-hour series ourselves, one point per minute, and keep it on disk. Our own code draws the ingot; nothing is captured from other sites.

Known limits: one price source, so an outage at gold-api.com pauses the stream until it recovers. The screen says so. At weekends the spot market is closed and the price stays flat.

How to read it: spot, futures and the troy ounce

The edge of the ingot is the price line of the last 24 hours, oldest on the left and live on the right. Milled lines mark round 20-dollar levels, the dashed line marks the price 24 hours ago, and notches on the base mark each hour. The hero number is the live spot, per troy ounce.

Spot versus futures

Spot is the price for gold delivered now. It is what dealers quote and what most news reports mean by "the gold price". Futures are contracts for delivery on a fixed date, traded on exchanges such as COMEX. They usually sit slightly above spot, because the buyer defers storage and financing costs. This stream shows spot.

What a troy ounce is

Gold is priced per troy ounce, not per kitchen ounce. A troy ounce weighs 31.1035 grams, about 10 percent more than the 28.35-gram avoirdupois ounce. One kilogram of gold is 32.15 troy ounces. Every price on this stream is dollars per troy ounce.

Trading hours and weekends

Spot gold trades almost around the clock from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon, New York time, with a short daily pause. At the weekend the market is closed. The stream keeps running, but the number stays at Friday's close until trading resumes on Sunday evening.

The seam on the ingot

When the stream starts, there is no spot history yet. The first 24 hours are filled with PAXG/USDT one-minute closes from Binance, a tokenized gold price that tracks spot within a few dollars. The screen labels this stretch and shows a seam where real spot data begins. After 24 hours the proxy is gone.

Frequently asked questions

What is the XAU/USD spot price?

XAU is the ISO 4217 code for one troy ounce of gold, and USD is the US dollar. XAU/USD is the price of one troy ounce of gold in dollars for immediate settlement. It is the number most gold price websites, dealers and news reports quote.

What is the difference between spot gold and gold futures?

Spot gold is the price for delivery now. Gold futures are contracts for delivery at a fixed date, traded on exchanges such as COMEX. Futures usually trade slightly above spot because the buyer avoids paying storage and financing until delivery. The gap shrinks as the contract approaches expiry. This monitor shows spot.

What is a troy ounce?

A troy ounce is the standard unit for precious metals. It weighs 31.1035 grams, about 10 percent more than the 28.35-gram ounce used for food. A kilogram of gold is 32.15 troy ounces. When you see a gold price per ounce, it is always per troy ounce.

How often does the gold price update, and what happens at weekends?

The spot price refreshes every 30 seconds from gold-api.com. The 24-hour history is built by us, one point per minute, and drawn as an ingot with one step every six minutes. Spot gold trades from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon New York time. At the weekend the market is closed, so the price on screen stays at Friday's close.

Is this the official LBMA gold price?

No. The LBMA Gold Price is a benchmark set twice a day in a London auction. This monitor shows a continuous spot quote from gold-api.com that follows the same market all day. Use the LBMA price for contracts and accounting; use this stream to watch the market move.
